An oral History of a Black Football Club................

Highfield Rangers, an amateur football club from Leicester, was established by a group of young men in 1970 who came to England as children from the Caribbean in the 1960s.

"It's about the history. If you've not experienced it, you won't really understand what it's about, that's the truth. I was enthused by this oral history project because I think it's those threads that need to be linked for people to really understand. You can tell them verbally, but they need to see these things; see the photos, actually read and experience the history, like us as a club ..."

This oral history was produced to celebrate the Club's twentieth anniversary in 1990-91, and its considerable achievements both on and off the field.

It is not only the football enthusiast who will enjoy this book. This is an engrossing and often moving account of the obstacles and trials faced by the first Black club in Leicester, and the struggles and will to succeed of those who founded it, play for it, and support it.

In this and other respects, the history of Highfield Rangers is very much a part of the wider history of the African Caribbean community in Leicester.

In 1988 they joined the Premier Division of the Central Midlands League. After four years of top-four finishes, the club joined the Leicestershire Senior League in 1992. In 1998–99 they reached the third round of the FA Vase, which remains a club record. The following season they won the Senior League.
