In early July, Highfield Rangers started a weekly initiative that helps local families, reduces food waste and supports the young people of our club. Groceries To Go takes place every Thursday evening at the club, and it’s open to everyone.
How It Works
For just £5, shoppers can fill one of our shopper bags with a mixed range of groceries. Our food comes from a mixture of local stores, and we provide the bags so that every shopper gets the same chance, so please don’t bring your own.
The products are at or near their best-before date but are perfectly good to eat. They’re best enjoyed within the next few days, or frozen for later. Some items, such as meat, are limited per person so that everyone can have a choice.
From Three Shoppers to Families Every Week
On our first Thursday, three people stopped by to pay for a bag. Today, around 15 to 18 families come through every week, and the response from the community has been wonderful.
It has also been a real team effort. Our club volunteers have embraced Groceries To Go, helping to collect food throughout the week and supporting the club on Thursday nights. We’re grateful to every one of them. The initiative also helps us look after our own: the older boys at the club are fed on Wednesday and Thursday nights after training or games.
Since we started, we have:
Every bag bought helps a young player at our club. Come along, tell your friends and neighbours, and if you’d like to volunteer or find out more, we’d love to hear from you.
